Shadowing a Giant

Part of the process of becoming a CRNA is the shadowing experience. Just like in any career field, I think it is important for one to follow, or shadow, a person who is established in the profession. In my past post, you can see that I have already shadowed a CRNA at my hospital. It was an experience that cemented my decision to pursue a career in anesthesia. I wanted to be at the head of the OR table, watching every heartbeat, while the surgeon operates.

So why shadow another CRNA? Well, why not? I think the more experiences I see in the OR, the more prepared I will be for the future. I always learn something new when I observe. I am a sponge and soak up as much knowledge on anesthesia as possible. It makes it so much easier when the person you are shadowing loves to teach.

The other week, I had the pleasure of shadowing one of the finest CRNA’s. She has been providing anesthesia for over four decades and seen the advances medicine has made. She travels around the country to lecture students on anesthesia. She has a law degree and was a former AANA president. All I can say is, I was excited to pick her brain!
